Auto Adjust if interval is missed

If it takes me longer to complete an interval than the app had targeted, my watch should recognize that I haven't completed the set yet and wait for me to finish the set before beginning the next one. I recently did a 500 yard swim with an 8 minute interval. It took me 9 minutes to complete the 500 yards, and when I got to the wall, my watch was showing that I was technically 30 seconds into my next set. This led to issues of data tracking for my workout, and the app ended up overestimating the number of yards I swam.
If the timer expires for an interval and the watch knows I haven't finished swimming the distance, it would be great if it waited for me to finish the interval before starting the next segment.

this should be considered an essential feature. if it can calculate my strokes per lap, then it should know I'm still swimming. Even if the counter/timer is "off-by-5" (seconds/stroked) on the finishing length, it would be better than hitting pause 15 seconds after the next interval has started and no way to reset or catch up
perhaps one implementation would be to rotate the bezel on the watch backwards to rewind and restart the set/interval,,, opposite function of the forward rotation that kicks off the next set in 3...2...1

If it goes into the next workout set. You can always pause it if you need a longer break or to catch up in the next set and then Resume the workout.
Or next time before the workout starts, adjust your 500 Interval time, to 9 minutes, 10 minutes, etc.

I have been frustrated and demotivated when I find that I don’t get a break in between sets but I am not sure if my examples are the same and / or garmin interface?

Great suggestion. It would also be useful if it would automatically adjust if you beat the targeted time by a significant margin. I know you can scroll to speed up the timer, but if it automatically did that, that would help push you.

Great suggestion! This happens to me sometimes several times especially in a tough set and it does lower the motivation/enjoyment if you have to start the next set in the negative - where you essentially already know you won't make it. The proposed feature would resolve this...

Happens to me if I don’t finish a drill in time. It’s trickier with drills because it doesn’t know when you’ve finished the distance.

I feel that is what pause is for. It’s also feedback to tweak your intervals the next time you do 500’s. 9:20 or 9:30 is much better for you than 8:00. For now. 🙂

Freddi Woodford I agree that pause is there and I have used that sometimes, but I have to notice the watch vibrating on my wrist mid set. I don’t always catch it. But pause is actually the opposite of what I’m looking for here. If I pause at 8:00 and keep swimming, the app will not track the additional laps I am making up, nor the time. Which means I won’t get that feedback that I need to adjust to 9:20.
What I am ultimately suggesting is that the interval auto-pauses if it knows I haven’t completed the distance required, but does not pause the timer or the lap tracking. After the workout, the coach can point out that I missed these intervals and that would hopefully feed into the AI algorithm to automatically adjust my interval times going forward.

Derek I think one of the neat aspects of this app is that it's fairly intuitive, meaning it will adjust intervals based on past performance. That being said, depending on how I feel, I adjust my intervals myself per workout. A great way to know what an overall interval should be for you is knowing what your base interval is for 10 x 100. If you did the 500 on 9:00, that might mean you could do 10 x 100 on 2:00 or maybe 2:10. Base all intervals off of that for a time as you zero in on what works for different distances. (200s on 4:00, 300s on 6:00...) It might be asking too much for the app to "know" you missed an interval and to pause on its own. If it misinterprets, the workout is really messed up. It's better to get the intervals right beforehand, as you learn what those should be. I obviously have time on my hands this morning so I'm talking a lot. :)
